On January 1, 2001, during a violent storm, the Georgian ship Pati lost control and crashed into the cliffs near Aquarium Bay in the Kiriş area of Kemer. Carrying illegal immigrants from Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the vessel broke in two. The bow sank immediately, while the stern remained lodged on the rocks, finally slipping beneath the waves in the winter of 2004.
